A city hike is a different experience from a mountain hike, but certainly just as interesting. This course includes four guided tours through Knoxville's most fascinating walks, including a surprise destination during one session. We'll visit the University of Tennessee campus, showing how it has unfolded from a tiny regional college on its original hilltop campus of 1828 into a major university. We'll discover the sculpture and biography of National Cemetery and Old Gray Cemetery, with stories of the surprising and far-flung folks buried there. And we'll explore downtown Knoxville-the original part from the river to Market Square, once known as Uptown, and then the railroad, Emory Place, Old City, Irish Town, and Cripple Creek area, once known as Downtown. Each walk will last about two hours, and we'll conduct them rain or shine. (If the weather is really terrible, we'll find a place inside to talk.)
Student praise for this course: "Mr. Neely is a wealth of information. I am a lifelong resident of Knoxville and I leaned so much! I enjoyed this course very much and would definitely recommend it to anyone."
