MEETING LOCATION: Kanati Fork Trailhead Parking area on Hwy 441. If traveling from Tennessee toward North Carolina, the parking area is 8.4 miles below Newfound Gap on Hwy. 441 S. or, if traveling from North Carolina toward Tennessee, Kanati Fork Trailhead parking area is 7.6 miles north of Oconaluftee Visitor Center on Hwy. 441 N. We will meet here and then carpool ~5 miles up Hwy. 441 N. to our starting point at the Thomas Divide Trailhead parking area.

Joel Zachry
Joel and Kathy Zachry have taught plant and animal sessions for the Smoky Mountain Field School since the early 1980s. They completed section-hiking the 2,175 miles of the Appalachian Trail in 2005 and released their first book, Bears We've Met, in May 2010.
