Spend an early spring day hiking and learning about nature along one of the "loop gems" of the Park, the Finley Cane trail via Lead Cove and Bote Mountain trails nestled below Thunderhead Mountain and the crest of the Smokies. This journey is about 7.1 miles roundtrip with a gain of almost 1,400 feet in elevation in the first 1.8 miles, moderate with rock and roots, all within a diverse forest. Once the trail intersects the Bote Mountain trail, it's mostly a downhill hike of 2.5 miles to Finley Cane and then 2.8 miles to the point of beginning at Laurel Creek Road. Learn about the history of the ever-changing landscape and identify some early emerging flowers and the abundance of trees. Join Joel and Kathy Zachry, the two longest-serving Field School instructors, for a satisfying day of exploring and learning while sharing our experiences and knowledge.
