We’ll visit the Elkmont area of the park in the evening in order to learn about the history of the area and the natural cycle of the synchronous fireflies. Until recently, this unbelievable natural phenomenon was unknown but now has become a very popular destination at this time of year. We hope to see the fireflies as we discuss the history of these amazing creatures along with synchrony in nature and bioluminescence, of which we’ll see examples. By the end of the evening you’ll understand the story of the synchronous firefly and know of many other glowing and blinking creatures to look for on a night exploration.

You must be 18 or older to register for and attend a Smoky Mountain Field School course.

Note: Participants are required to sign an electronic release and assumption of risk form before attending this course.

Notes:

Meet at the Elkmont upper parking area for Jakes Creek Trailhead. Some date flexibility may be required due to the firefly activity levels.
Fee: $79.00
