Learn to find your way with map and compass. This course will cover Topographical Map reading (contour lines, terrain features, slope angles, etc.) We'll cover the different uses for a compass and how to use a compass with a map and outside on the terrain. The three grid systems on Topo maps (Latitude/Longitude, UTM, and State Plane Coordinates) will be covered along with how to adjust to Magnetic Declination. We'll learn how to use Army Ranger Beads to keep track of the distance walked and how to keep on course around an obstacle such as a lake or cliff. After classroom time we'll go outside and put these skills to use on a compass course.


You must be 18 or older to register for and attend a Smoky Mountain Field School course.

Note: Participants are required to sign an electronic release and assumption of risk form before attending this course.

Curtis Hixon is an instructor for the Smoky Mountain Field School, leading weekend programs on orienteering. He previously has taught junior ranger programs on compass orienteering and basic map reading in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
