In this course we'll survey the progression of East Tennessee history after the conclusion of the Civil War. After a period of rapid re-adjustment during the Reconstruction era, East Tennessee assumed a prominent place in the development of a more progressive "New South," a period that ended abruptly with the onset of the Great Depression and WWII. We'll also discuss important trends and events in the post war era-such as the 1982 World's Fair-and evaluate where East Tennessee fits in with the rest of contemporary American culture.
